UN RDT/RDG: UN Regional Directors Group (RDG) Meeting
Panama. 29-30 June, 2009.- The Regional Directors Group (RDG) of UNAIDS Cosponsors in Latin America and the Caribbean had a very successful meeting in Panama this week, the last meeting under PAHO's chairmanship.
Dr. Mirta Roses, PAHO Director who delivered the opening remarks expressed that this gathering is a good time to measure progress made over the last year and propose some critical lines of action for the next joint RDG work plan 2010-2011.

PAHO Director co-chair an special session on HIV/AIDS for the Latin America region at AIDS 2008
Mexico City. August 3-8, 2008. XVII International AIDS Conference, AIDS 2008.- PAHO Director co-chair the special session on HIV for Latin America region with Carlos Passarelli, Deputy Director of the Brazilian National AIDS Programme and Director of the International Center for Technical Cooperation on HIV/AIDS. The session focused the discussion about the actions taken in the Latin American region since the FORO and CONCASIDA 2007 and what has to be done to establish formal links between regional conferences and International AIDS conferences.

PAHO became the new chair of the UNAIDS Regional Directors Group (RDG).
The Regional Directors Group of UNAIDS Cosponsors in Latin America and the Caribbean had a very successful biannual meeting at PAHO Headquarters on July 25, 2008. The RDG, as it is commonly called, adopted several policies to guide and strengthen the UN joint action against HIV/AIDS at country level.
Among these was a policy adapting the Division of Labor to better take into account the mandates and strengths of each of the UNAIDS cosponsors in Latin America and the Caribbean.
PAHO became the new Chair of the RDG for the 2008/2009 period, a role it played when the RDG was founded in 2003. UNICEF becomes the new Vice-Chair. .

HIV/TB Global Leaders' Forum (United Nations Headquarters, New York, 9 June 2008)
The purpose of forum--the first of its kind--was to speed up actions to face the epidemic of both these diseases, which causes the deaths of a quarter million people each year. The forum ended with a Call to Action to drastically reduce the number of deaths associated with TB/HIV co-infection. Guide for TB/HIV Counselling and Testing in Tuberculosis Programs
In two parts: Full-text guide and flipchart for use during counselling sessions. This guide and the accompanying materials were developed to provide support to health workers involved in caring for persons with tuberculosis in all areas of the health sector. Its intention is to promote the development of the necessary skills in TB control teams, with the objective of reducing the risk of TB patients of contracting HIV infection and to offer antiretroviral treatment and comprehensive care to those who are have acquired the infection.

This 2007 edition of Health in the Americas presents a broad picture of the regional situation and that of all the countries with regard to health and human development; specific disease conditions and risk factors;
environmental health, and the evolution of health systems and services. In addition, it considers and discusses progress made regarding the global commitment, expressed in the United Nations Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs), to tackle extreme poverty, hunger, disease, lack of water and sanitation, inadequate housing, and social exclusion and to promote gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. That expression of countries’ collective commitment to social equity informs the text throughout this publication.

RDG on HIV/AIDS scaling up regional responses in Latin America and the Caribbean.

February 26, 2007. - Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of the Pan American Health Organization lead the PAHO delegation that participated in the Regional Directors Group Meeting on HIV/AIDS (LAC RDG on HIV/AIDS) at UNDP HQs. The LAC RDG on HIV/AIDS have long recognized that HIV/AIDS is a global crisis, which calls for an immediate response. PAHO will work closely with other agencies in the implementation of the work plan 2007.

The Leishmaniases and Leishmania/HIV Co-Infections (WHO Fact Sheet No. 116)
This official WHO fact sheet provides basic information on leishmaniasis, a vector-borne disease transmitted by the bite of the infected female phlebotomine sandfly. Leishmaniases are a globally widespread group of parasitic diseases. The sandfly vector is usually infected with one species of flagellate protozoa belonging to the genus Leishmania. Leishmaniasis presents itself in humans in different forms with a broad range of clinical manifestations, all forms with devastating consequences. Leishmania/HIV co-infection is emerging as an extremely serious, new disease and it is increasingly frequent. There are important clinical, diagnostic, chemotherapeutic, epidemiological and economic implications of this trend.

VIHdeo America: an anthology of 10 years of HIV TV spots in the Americas
VIHdeo America is an initiative of the Pan American Health Organization to disseminate TV spots about HIV created by different countries on a two-disc DVD set that contains 198 TV spots produced between 1995 and 2005 in 24 countries of the Americas. Copies of this DVD may be requested through the PAHO Publications Program.

New Approaches to HIV Prevention
A growing number of promising new hiv prevention approaches are in the late stages of clinical research, and have the
potential to dramatically reduce the burden of hiv/aids around the world. Research on some of these approaches, such
as male circumcision and diaphragms, could show results within the next two years.
But there are serious obstacles that could significantly delay, or even derail, critical prevention trials — including
inadequate resources and capacity to launch and complete trials, and emerging ethical concerns. Moreover, the world is
unprepared to capitalize on the potential success of prevention research currently underway. Very little has been done
to mobilize resources and develop the public health guidance, provider training, and public education needed to ensure
rapid implementation of new prevention methods.
This new report by the Global hiv Prevention Working Group, New Approaches to hiv Prevention: Accelerating
Research and Ensuring Future Access, summarizes the state of hiv prevention research, and makes recommendations to
speed research on promising new hiv prevention methods, and ensure rapid access to new tools and strategies as soon
as they are proven effective.

Toward Universal Access to HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment: 3 by 5 Report for the Americas
As governments, organizations, and individuals strive to combat AIDS deaths and the spread of HIV, we must all aim high. The magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its potential to spread require high level planning and large scale action. When the World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS set the goal to treat three million people with antiretrovirals by 2005, it was with this aim to think big and achieve commensurate gains.

Regional HIV/STI Plan for the Health Sector 2006-2015
The Regional HIV/STI Plan for the Health Sector 2006-2015 is a tool to assist health services and systems in the Americas to more effectively respond to the HIV epidemic and to prevent and control STI. It is meant to strengthen national plans in all countries of the Region. The ten year length of the Plan encourages international and national planners to consider the long-term impact and sustainability of programs, and view the trajectory of the disease in relation to other long-term economic and human development goals. The Regional Plan will be a valuable resource to improve institutional coordination and build social and economic capital to halt the spread of HIV now and for years to come.

Country Information on HIV in the Americas
Below you will find two sets of documents containing country-specific information about the HIV epidemic. The Care and Treatment Info Sheets include information about the care of people with HIV, antiretroviral coverage, lines of treatment, and drug prices, among other things. The Epidemiological Info Sheets contain the most recent country specific data on prevalence, incidence and prevention activities, summarizing the status of epidemic. Both Information Sheets were produced in collaboration with national authorities and reflect the best information made available to PAHO/WHO and partner organizations.

HIV/AIDS-Related Stigma and Discrimination in the Health Sector
A PAHO report issued in 2003 revealed that HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination persists among health workers of many countries, including the Americas. According to the report, those who are discriminated against may suffer physically and psychologically, while those who fear discrimination may be reluctant to seek testing or treatment. When this happens, people living with HIV and those at risk of infection are less able to protect themselves and their partners from infections. In addition to the report, PAHO produced a series of materials (posters, public service announcements, press releases, power point presentations), which can be found in this page. They aim at helping the health sector discuss the issue and are being used, together with the report, in several forums such as meetings with health sector personal, NGOs, professional associations, and ethics committees.

This summary report provides an operational definition of HIV/AIDS comprehensive care and outlines the core components of HIV/AIDS care. It presents a care model, outlined in a Building Block Framework, that is meant to provide guidance in the development of policies and strategies and promote discussion about the full spectrum of care required to meet the needs of PLHAs, their families, and caregivers.
