Hanseniasis is a curable disease—a fact not always known when people who have it face the anxiety and fear that the very word "leprosy" generates. PAHO/WHO-Brazil is part of an intensive effort in that country to detect, treat, cure, and eliminate Hanseniasis. Part of this effort involves raising public awareness of the disease, helping to destigmatize it by projecting a more positive, human image of the people who are being treated or were cured (i.e. Little girl 1 and the people in the poster promoting the message that people can go on to live a healthy, normal life after receiving treatment). These 30 photos reflect this new trend, accompanied by some clinical photos for use in training health-care workers to identify symptoms.
