Healthy Homes, Healthy Communities:

An environmental health manual for use by your family and community

Many people in communities have problems getting enough water for drinking, washing and keeping the home clean. Many people also do not know how mosquitoes can cause disease, how to get rid of garbage properly or what to do if there is a fire in the home or poisonous gases in the air. The purpose of this community-level course is to educate people on how to make their homes safe and clean, minimize the chances of getting a disease from unsafe conditions (for example, illnesses transmitted by vectors, parasites, rodents or waste), and to know what to do in case of emergencies or disasters. It promotes healthy practices in daily living that impact upon health and wellbeing.

To teach people how to avoid unhealthy situations, the course focuses on those areas in need of attention, with a chapter devoted to each. It contains special exercises aimed at reinforcing course content, some especially designed for children (coloring, puzzles, matching games).

Because the course proved effective in its original site (Trinidad and Tobago), PAHO is making it available for use elsewhere as a basic tool to communities in planning local programs to improve their living conditions and make their homes and communities a healthier place to be.

PAHO developed this course in collaboration with the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Limited (PLIPDECO), Cliffs and Associates (CAL), the Power Generation Company of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (POWERGEN), Farmland MissChem Limited (FMCL) and Hydro Agri Trinidad Limited.
