Murray Hiebert
Washington Bureau Chief
Far Eastern Economic Review

The epidemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has struck East Asia and other parts of the world with a vengeance. Its medical implications are still unclear and work has just begun on finding a cure. The economic implications of SARS are, however, all too clear. It has had a serious impact on tourism and the overall economies of China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and even Canada.

Dr. Marlo Libel of the Pan American Health Organization, the local office of the World Health Organization, will discuss the epidemiology of SARS and provide a perspective on the potential for controlling and conquering the disease. Murray Hiebert, Washington bureau chief for the Far Eastern Economic Review, which has covered the crisis intensively, will give an overview of its economic and political impact.
