- Obtain political will for a sustainable approach to the issue of tuberculosis control in prisons.
- Have each country present an Action Plan for TB control in prisons to health, social-welfare/security, and prison officials.
- Ensure that action plans to control TB in prisons comply with the DOTS strategy and with the respective national disease-control guidelines.
- Obtain support from nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and donors, including special agencies that fund TB control projects in the countries (Global Fund, USAID, CIDA-Canada), to enable compliance with the action plans that have been developed.
- Ensure that the ministries of health and prison officials assume joint responsibility for actions to control the problem of TB in prisons.
- Establish plans for joint monitoring and evaluation.
- Prioritize the IEC (information-education-communciation) plan for TB control in prisons so as to ensure the participation of health and prison staff, persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), their families, and the community.
- Promote the exchange of experiences and information among countries through the PAHO Regional Program on Tuberculosis.
- Hold a regional meeting every year to evaluate progress made in implementing the action plan.
