The PAHO Regional Program on Tuberculosis, in collaboration the the Gorgas TB Initiative (University of Alabama at Birmingham), is organizing a second workshop on tuberculosis control in prisons/penitentiaries to follow up on last year's meeting in Honduras.

Target Audience: National TB Program and Prison-System Directors from the following Latin American and Caribbean countries:

Ecuador

Guyana
Haiti
Honduras
Mexico
Nicaragua
Panama
Peru
Venezuela

Objectives

  • Present, analyze and discuss recent epidemiological data on TB in prisons in the Region.
  • Assess the progress made by National TB Programs (NTPs) and prison health authorities towards the action plans for TB control in prisons (developed at the first workshop).
  • Strengthen collaboration between NTPs and prison authorities in the Region.

Expected Results

  • Increased awareness of TB control issues in prison settings among NTP and prison authorities.
  • Evaluation of the progress made in TB control in prisons by each participating country.
  • Formulation of action plans for 2004-2005 for TB control activities in prisons for the participating countries.

Working Language: Spanish, with Spanish-English interpreters
