Background
In September 2006, the PAHO Directing Council approved a Regional Strategy and Plan of Action on an Integrated Approach to the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases, including Diet, Physical Activity and Health, for 2006–2015 (NCD Strategy). Following the endorsement of the Ministers of Health for the NCD Strategy, it will be PAHO's responsibility to implement activities in order to achieve its objectives. While the Unit of Noncommunicable Diseases (HDM/NC) has a principal role in this regard, it is a shared responsibility among all staff working in chronic disease prevention and control across several Units and Areas of PAHO, the Country Offices and Centers.
This meeting was an opportunity for professional update and agreement in chronic disease prevention and control for all relevant focal points in Country Offices and Centers, as well as relevant staff in other Units at Headquarters.

Objectives
- In-depth information about:
- Chronic disease epidemiology and health determinants and the current situation in the Americas
- The Regional NCD Strategy and its four lines of action and other relevant strategies (Nutrition in Health and Development)
- WHO platform: mandates, strategies, resolutions with respect to chronic diseases
- Increased knowledge of available strategies and tools that can be adapted and tailored to the country situation in support of the implementation of the NCD Strategy, including:
- Effective evidence-based interventions for prevention and control of chronic diseases and risk factors
- Monitoring and evaluation tools
- Existing publications about chronic disease and its burden
- Discussion and understanding on:
- How to promote an interprogrammatic and team approach for chronic disease prevention and control at the subregional and national levels
- How to assess needs and challenges and country capacity for chronic disease prevention and control
- Agreement on the measurement of progress towards the implementation of the NCD Strategy and Plan of Action using indicators for monitoring and evaluation developed within Mid-Term Strategic plan (SO3 and SO6) to be used at the national, subregional and regional levels

Expected Results
- Update knowledge and skills in chronic diseases prevention and control
- Increase ownership and commitment towards the implementation of the NCD Strategy and Plan of Action
- Agree on priorities and responsibilities with regards to the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the NCD Strategy and Plan of Action
Target Audience
- NCD focal points in all PAHO/WHO Country Offices | Directory
- Focal points in the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC), the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI), the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) and the US-Mexico Border Field Office (FO/USMB)
- Staff from the Units of Health Analysis & Statistics, Health Policies & Systems, Risk Assessment & Management, Health Services Organization, and Health Determinants & Social Policies
Projected Impact on Technical Cooperation in the Countries (TCC): This training served to engage the focal points to implement the NCD Strategy and to enable them to carry out related activities within their respective country.
Evaluation (Pre- and Post-Test): A pre-training workshop questionnaire was sent to all participants in order to assess their current knowledge, barriers and opportunities for their current engagement with regards to chronic disease prevention and control. Following the workshop, a post-questionnaire was administered to assess knowledge gained and opportunities to implement the NCD Strategy.
