Japan has given a $4.42 million grant to Pakistan to obtain 25.7 million doses of oral polio vaccine to help the country meet its goal of eradicating polio by 2010. Over the last 15 years, Japan has contributed $82.18 million to the effort. UNICEF's Martin Mogwanja says, "The recent independent assessment mission, which evaluated the remaining barriers to eradicating polio highlighted that there is tremendous hope that our target can be achieved by overcoming the remaining operational barriers." He notes that 250 polio cases per month were reported in 1994, but the polio eradication campaign has reduced the total number of cases to 82 so far this year.
