Water is an essential nutrient which is often forgotten when nutrients are discussed. Like other nutrients, the body does not produce water. The importance of water lies in the fact that there is no basic biochemical bodily function that occurs without it.
Some of the functions and benefits of water highlighted in this issue are as follows:
Functions
- Energy production.
- Digestion of foods and the transportation of nutrients around the body.
- Removal of waste products.
- Protection of delicate body organs.
Benefits
- Prevents dehydration.
- Calorie free.
- Inexpensive.
- Widely available.
- Helps to control hunger pangs.
- Helps with weight control.
While the regular consumption of water is advised, on rare occasion, it is possible to have too much water and this may result in water intoxication or poisoning. The quantity of water to be consumed everyday depends on certain factors including an individual's age and sex.
It is important to note that the entire fluid requirement of an individual does not have to be met by water alone. Some foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables, make significant contributions to our fluid intake and are a part of a healthy diet.
