Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the leading causes of death in the Caribbean. In this issue, some information about the risk factors in CHD is presented. Some of these factors are uncontrollable while others are controllable.
The uncontrollable factors include:
- Heredity (genes;
- Age; and
- Sex.
The controllable factors on the other hand are:
- Diet;
- Weight;
- Levels of physical activity/exercise;
- Alcohol intake; and
- Stress levels.
Other risk factors are blood pressure, obesity, smoking, and diabetes.
The key to the prevention of CHD is moderation in eating and living habits.
