that of rural inhabitants with that of city dwellers; that of residents with that of migrants.

PAHO and UNICEF Working Together to support LAC Countries

Washington, D.C., April 25, 2008.
Top officials and technical experts from UNICEF visited the Pan American Health
Organization today to discuss areas of joint collaboration including water and sanitation,
nutrition, social support for mothers and children, work in health emergencies and risk
communications focusing on pregnant women, children and adolescents.
Dr. Mirta Roses Periago, Director of PAHO and Dr. Nils Kastberg, Director of the UNICEF regional office shared the moral imperatives of helping excluded populations to address the unfinished agenda and accelerate progress toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

Director of the Pan American Health Organization opens the first Latin American Conference in Research and Innovation for Health

15 - 18 April 2008.
The conference involves strengthening strategies and action plans for the national health research systems in Latin America
bringing together countries in Latin America to discuss successes and challenges in research for health for development.
In her visit to Brazil, Dr. Mirta Roses fulfilled an extensive agenda that included signing a protocol of intentions between PAHO and the municipal council of the city of Duque de Caxias-RJ where the Veterinary Public Health Unit-PANAFTOSA is based.
Dr. Mirta Roses accompanied the visit to PANAFTOSA of Dr. Luis Sambo, WHO's Regional Director for Africa, which reflects the history of joint effort from the organizations, and represents an important exchange for the information systems and basic data in Health.

PAHO working to improve public health, equity, and health systems at the 42nd Session of the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR/CAIS)

Dr. Mirta Roses, PASB Director, convened the 42nd Session of the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 13-15 April, 2007.
Although research has been always present in PAHO's activities, this is the first time that the Organization is developing an explicit policy for consultation with member states, to guide its research activities in keeping with international mandates that underline the key role of research in attaining the Millenium Development Goals and in improving public health, equity, and health systems.
It also reflects the recognition that research is instrumental to the fulfillment of several core functions linked to WHO's Eleventh General Programme of Work 2006-2015, with which the PASB's Strategic Plan 2008-2012 is aligned.

Presentación realizada por la Dra. Roses, Directora de la OPS/OMS como invitada especial a la celebración de la XXIX Reunión de Ministros
de Salud del Área Andina (REMSAA) celebrada del 9 al 10 de abril en Quito, Ecuador, con la
participación de los ministros y ministras de Salud de Bolivia,
Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela, así como los países miembros
observadores del Organismo Andino de Salud (Argentina, Brasil, Cuba, España, Guyana, Panamá,
Paraguay, Uruguay y Surinam). Como invitados especiales participaron además el señor
Freddy Ehlers, Secretario General de CAN, entre otros
delegados de instituciones y organismos de las Américas.
Durante la exposición de su conferencia sobre la Atención Primaria de
Salud y Salud para Todos APS/SPT a 30 años de Alma Ata, la Directora señaló la importancia de abordar la
atención primaria de salud como una estrategia renovada y vigente
para abordar las desigualdades e inequidades de la región. Enfatizó la situación de pobreza y
disparidades que enfrenta la región actualmente, así como el legado de Alma-Ata: Atención
Primaria como movimiento social y político que continúa influenciando a generaciones por su
sentido integral, sinérgico y universal.

Global health put at risk by climate change.
"The effect of climate change over health is neither a minor issue nor a theoretical possibility: it is already happening, here and now, and it is related to major public health problems. Some of our biggest killers such as malaria, diarrhea, and risk conditions such as under-nutrition, the single largest contributor to the global burden of disease, are among diseases that are sensitive to climate. These are also diseases of children and diseases of poverty."
