PAHO's Director brings leadership and knowledge to the Americas

The NATION'S HEALTH, the official newspaper of the American Public Health Association (APHA)
published this month an interview with Dr. Roses who was also elected as APHA's vice president
for Latin America at the Association's 2007 Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

2008 World Day for Safety and Health at Work

'Since the launch of the PAHO Workers' Health Regional Plan of Action in 1999, several
milestones have been attained to help improve the lives and well-being of million of workers,
their families, and communities in the Americas. Over the years, there has been an increase in
awareness of the role and influence of our environment and workplace environment on our health.
This has been possible through the advocacy and work of local, national, and international
leaders in the field of occupational and environmental health. This day provides us with an
opportunity to recognize the commitment of the global community that works towards a common
goal: improving the health and safety of workers.'
'Today, I would like to draw your attention to two WHO Global Plans, in which the Pan American Health Organization is taking an active role. The first one is the WHO Workers' Health Global Plan of Action and the second is the WHO Global Action Plan Against Cancer. The synergy between regional and global priorities aims to align and coordinate our work toward improving the health of individuals, families and countries.'

'During World Health Day, the PAHO Green and Healthy initiative was launched, continuing our commitment to healthy workplace. This initiative is embedded in the concept that workplace and work practices play a role in promoting the health and well-being of the employees, and their families.'

OPS reconoce labor de Venezuela en favor de la Salud

La directora de la OPS, Dra. Mirta Roses Periago en visita oficial a Venezuela entregó el certificado - que califica a Venezuela de haber cumplido con los estándares universales de vacunación - al Presidente del país Hugo Chávez Frías.
"...Venezuela es merecedora del certificado por haber cumplido con las acciones y estrategias establecidas en Resolución del Consejo Directivo de la OPS, para cumplir la meta de eliminación de la rubéola y el síndrome de rubéola congénita para el año 2010..."- expresó la Dra. Roses.
Campaña Venezolana de Vacunación contra la rubéola y el síndrome de la rubéola congénita concreta la inmunización de 10,6 millones de personas.

En la entrevista se tratan temas tales como: el uso de drogas y su relación con el abuso en el uso del alcohol, los programas de acceso a las drogas; nuevos casos de fiebre amarilla urbana en la región y las altas incidencias de infestación de mosquitos en algunos países de la región; la exclusión social en salud y el compromiso de eliminar algunas enfermedades de la región.

Directora de la OPS designada Médica del Año 2007 a Nivel Internacional

 Buenos Aires, Argentina.Octubre 30, 2007.
La Revista Gracias Doctor, publicación de la Academia Nacional de Medicina de Argentina, designó
a la Dra. Mirta Roses Periago, Directora de la OPS/OMS como "Médico del año 2007 a nivel internacional", primera mujer
latinoamericana que dirige la institución.
La Dra. Roses expresó sus palabras de agradecimiento reflejando su inmensa inquietud por el estado sanitario de
los pueblos latinoamericanos.
El Dr. Tulio Huberman, leyó una hermosa carta durante la entrega, que fue recibida a nombre de la Dra. Roses, por la Dra. Eugenia Sacerdote de Lustig, la ilustre investigadora que el 9 de noviembre 2007 cumplió 97 años.
