Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting at the 61st World Health Assembly

Geneva, Switzerland. World Health Organization.
The election of chair for this meeting fell on Hon Mr John Maginley, Minister of Health of Antigua and Barbuda. Delegations from Caribbean Countries were headed by Ministers of Health from Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad & Tobago.
Ministers of Health were requested to reminder that Alma Ata and Primary Health Care were
defined to address the increasing inequities in health and this is another opportunity to
address this pending debt and move us closer to the achievement of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDG)

A total of 1,913 Virtual Conference sessions have taken place in PAHO which included the Regional Office, 28 Country Offices, 8 Pan American Centers, Ministries of Health, academic institutions, other WHO regions and international networks and partners.
Using these technologies has helped create a stronger sense of belonging, common understanding and ownership of policies, breaking the chronic barriers to participation due to high cost or time availability.
The adoption of this new and innovative way of working is in direct support to PAHO's results-based management approach moving the Organization to a learning organization that is horizontal, cross-cutting and knowledge based.

Ban Ki-moon gathers global health experts to improve care for world's poorest.
Atlanta, Georgia. May 8-9, 2008.
Carter Center
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and global health leaders meeting at the Carter Center in
the United States city of Atlanta agreed on measures to help make childbirth
safer and tackle other challenges facing the world's poorest and most vulnerable people.
Dr. Chan said women's health is critical. "The world in the last 20 years failed to take care
of its women"
President Carter said this was "one of the most important meetings" that he would attend this
year. He stressed that to address global health problems, "it is not only a matter of health
care but of economic progress for the poorest people on earth."
