Primary Health Care: A New Vision for the Fourth Decade

2008 mark the 30th anniversary of the Alma Ata Declaration. The principles of equitable access to affordable health care, using primary health care (PHC) as the tool to turn these principles into practice, remain as valid today as they did in 1978.

But times have changed greatly since 1978, and implementing a health system based on PHC, while successful in some countries, continues to face many challenges in general.

In this session, health leaders and experts talk about to create a new vision for PHC. What is the new template for reallocating resources to PHC, empowering the community, engaging the government, tracking health outcomes? For moving the principles of Alma Ata forward into the next decade?

PAHO celebrated World No Tobacco Day with a general event which included the WHO's World No Tobbaco Day Prize Awards Announcement for the Americas Region 2008.

WHO Press Release: WHO wants total ban on tobacco advertising
WHO urged governments to protect the world’s 1.8 billion young people by imposing a ban on all tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship. The World No Tobacco Day (31 May) campaign this year focuses on the efforts of the tobacco industry to attract young people to its addictive products through sophisticated marketing.

World Health Assembly sets bold new action for WHO

The 61st World Health Assembly, which comprised of a record 2704 participants from 190 nations, today set WHO on a course to tackle longstanding, new and looming threats to global public health.

"This is a major breakthrough for public health that will benefit many millions of people for many years to come," said WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan. "This is a contribution to fairness in health and this is pro-active public health at its very best."

La 61ª Asamblea Mundial de la Salud, que contó con la cifra récord de 2704 participantes de 190 naciones, ha fijado hoy el rumbo de la Organización Mundial de la Salud para hacer frente a los viejos, nuevos y futuros peligros que amenazan la salud pública mundial.

"Estamos ante un avance decisivo para la salud pública que beneficiará a muchos millones de personas durante muchos años", ha dicho la Dra. Margaret Chan, Directora General de la OMS. "Se trata de una contribución a la equidad sanitaria y de salud pública proactiva al más alto nivel."
