PAHO Director Mirta Roses Periago spoke about the organization’s role in the IACNDR and in emergency
operations as well as collaborating with humanitarian organizations, underscoring the importance of
strengthening information exchange to more effectively assist member countries with disaster response.
During the first meeting of the Inter-American Committee for Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNDR),
the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) established three Working Groups.
He invited the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) to chair the Natural Disaster Preparedness
and Response Working Group (PRWG).
The first meeting of the Working Group was held under the coordination of PAHO with the active
participation of international and Inter-American multilateral agencies, government agencies and
non-governmental organizations
One of the main objectives of the Working Group talks about supplying the Inter-American Committee for
Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNDR) with strategic recommendations for improving the response of the
Inter-American System to natural disasters, by strengthening local response to disasters in Latin
America and the Caribbean, with the active participation of civil society and the private and public
sectors.
Chairing a high-level hemispheric meeting on natural disaster reduction, Secretary General José Miguel
Insulza of the Organization of American States (OAS) suggested Monday that the Inter-American Committee on
Natural Disaster Reduction (IACNDR) consider establishing a one-stop information portal on natural disaster
initiatives in the Americas.
