Situation Report for the Cayman Islands
14 September, 2004

The following information has been provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross Office in the Cayman Islands

Damage Reports

The West Bay area of Grand Cayman has suffered about 90% damage. The sewerage system has collapsed, and there is sewage in the flood waters that have not yet subsided.

The Eastern District has been cut off. This is because the Ocean Club Condos have been pushed into the road.

The Bodden Town Civic Centre, a designated shelter collapsed at the height of the hurricane. The destabilization was noted by the shelter occupants and reported. They were evacuated during the height of the storm in 155mph winds. It is not known if this was acheived with out mishap.

The yacht club has been significantly damaged.

Critical Facilities

The status of the hospital is not known. Some 2000 people are now located in the Health Services compound (the public multi service medical facility). It is not known how many of them are there for medical treatment or merely for shelter.

Although, the airport is open, it is completely flooded and without power or guidance equipment. Two small planes have taken off. (Cable and Wirless has chartered a 737 plane in Panama to send supplies [generators, chain saws, telecom equip, water pumps] to Grand Cayman).

The status of the dock and seaport facilities is not known. However, the Waterfront area is under water.

Communications

No radio stations are operating at this time.

Security

Minimal looting has been reported.
