Health Sector

Haiti Minister of Health was appointed today: Dr. JOSETTE BIJOU.
At Canape Vert hospital, 31 bullet injured people, 8 stabbings and 4 deaths were reported from March 1st to March 9th. (Source: Medical Director Canape Vert Hospital and Civil Protection Direction in Haiti)
ICRC and WHO replenished medicines reserves of hospitals in Gonaives which had been looted. WHO/PAHO continue to distribute a health kit for 10,000 people for two hospitals in Port au Prince. Medicines and medical supplies are also on the way to a pediatric hospital in the capital.
SUMA trained personnel is already working in coordination with PROMESS, UNICEF and Government representatives to gather information to facilitate the distribution of medicines and medical supplies.
The Government of Japan decided to give emergency food aid worth 2.7 million dollars to Haiti through World Food Program, in response to the United Nations emergency appeal. (Source: AFP and Government of Japan).
The Government of México made a contribution of medicines and medical supplies which will be arriving in Port au Prince in the next two weeks.
Representatives of Venezuela in Haiti offered a contribution of drugs, fuel and food for the country.

NGOs

CARITAS launched an appeal of over USD 1 million to respond to the social and economic crisis in Haiti. (Source: Caritas webpage: www.caritas.org).

AVSI (Associazione Volontari per li Servizio Internationale) reports shortage of propane, gasoline and Gazoil in Les Cayes and that there’s no electricity at all in the city. (Source: AVSI)
Food for the Poor is working in the metropolitan area. Food is being distributed upon request to social institutions and emergency programs are being carried out in Cite Jeremie, Les Cayes, Rue Barbancourt, Rue Justin Juste and Rue Marien. (Source: Food for the Poor)
ICRC continues to work at Canape Vert Hospital in Port au Prince. More than 30 wounded people were treated in the past week.
