Virtual Journey through a Safe Hospital
Multimedia Training Program on Hospitals Safe from Disasters

For a number of years, PAHO/WHO has used new information technologies to produce disaster risk reduction training materials and other information resources. The launch of the new multimedia DVD Virtual Journey through a Safe Hospital, takes this body of material to a new level.

The new DVD uses multimedia technology and resources to make the learning experience much more versatile and easy to use. The program combines video, animation in two- and three-dimension, images and sound, and includes presentations and technical publications to create a virtual learning environment on ‘safe hospitals.’

The virtual tour is arranged by modules, which can be used independently to explore specific aspects of the issue or which can be followed in sequence for a complete overview. A users’ guide accompanies the DVD to help maximize the journey through the safe hospital, enabling the ‘traveller’ to adapt the route to his/her needs. A complete journey may take about three hours; on the other hand, the opening video—which gives a good overview of all the program’s components—can be viewed in about 15 minutes.

The virtual hospital DVD includes a library where support materials—text, videos, powerpoint presentations, etc.—can be consulted and downloaded, making this an excellent tool for self-study, Internet-based distance learning or classroom use by knowledgeable instructors.

Take a moment to consult the User’s Guide for an illustrated tour of this innovative training tool (click on the link in the right-hand column.) Feedback is always welcome at disaster-publications@paho.org.

The development of the Virtual Journey through a Safe Hospital has been made possible thanks to the financial support of the Division of Humanitarian Assistance, Peace and Security of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (OFDA/AID) and the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO). The Regional Office for the Americas of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) supported the duplication of this DVD within the framework of the 2008–2009 World Disaster Reduction Campaign, “Hospitals Safe from Disasters.”

Order a DVD from PAHO's Emergency Preparedness Program (disaster-publications@paho.org). Instructions for downloding the program will be published soon.
