Child Cancer Survivors Will Say “Thanks” to Blood Donors
PAHO to Host U.S. Observance of World Blood Donor Day
WHAT: Five child cancer survivors from throughout the Americas will honor the blood donors who helped save their lives and those of others, during the Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) observance of World Blood Donor Day.
World Blood Donor Day is held annually to recognize the contributions of voluntary, regular blood donors and to raise awareness of the importance of blood donation to ensure a safe and secure blood supply. The event is being organized by PAHO, with the participation of the American Red Cross and America’s Blood Centers (ABC).
WHEN: Thursday, June 14, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
WHERE: PAHO Headquarters, 525 23rd St., N.W., in Room B on the 2nd Floor. PAHO is at Virginia Avenue and 23rd St., some 4 blocks south of Foggy Bottom Metro.
WHO: Child cancer survivors Deneka Brickell Rolle, 8, of Bahamas; Daniel Enrique García Herrera, 11, of Colombia; Zulma Barrientos, 10, of Guatemala; Anisa Siras, 11, of Suriname; and Balee Wahl, 12, of the United States of America.
PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses will offer welcoming remarks.
Dr. Celso Bianco, of America’s Blood Centers (ABC), will provide an overview of blood needs in pediatric cancer.
PAHO: The Pan American Health Organization, founded in 1902, works with all the countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of their peoples. It serves as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO).
