WHAT: An Interagency Strategic Consensus on Reducing Neonatal Mortality and Morbidity in Latin America and the Caribbean will be launched at the Pan American Health Organization on June 21 at 2 pm in Room B, PAHO, 525 23rd St., NW, Washington D.C. 20037

AGENDA:

2:00 p.m. - Welcome and opening remarks: Dr. A. Virginia Camacho, PAHO

2:10 p.m. - Neonatal Situation in Latin America: Dr. Yehuda Benguigui, PAHO

2:20 p.m. - The process of the Strategic Consensus: Dr. Peg Marshall, USAID

2:30 p.m. - Contribution of Alliances on Neonatal Mortality Reduction: Charles MacCormack, Save the Children

2:40 p.m. - The Importance of the Neonatal Regional Consensus and Presentation of the document: Dr. Mirta Roses, Director, PAHO

WHO: Participating agencies include PAHO, USAID, UNICEF, the Access Project, BASICS, the CORE Group and Saving Newborn Lives (SNL)/Save the Children

WHY: In the last two decades, Latin America and the Caribbean have shown significant reductions in infant mortality rates, but neonatal mortality rates have remained static. Neonatal mortality in the Region now constitutes over 60 percent of deaths among children under the age of one, and an even larger proportion of under-five deaths. To fulfill the Millennium Development Goal related to infant mortality, actions must be taken to speed up the reduction of neonatal mortality

PAHO: The Pan American Health Organization, founded in 1902, works with all the countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of their peoples. It serves as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization.
