Argentina - Centennial Celebrations
Argentina concluded its centennial-year observances with a Dec. 11 reception in Puerto Madero organized by PAHO's country office, during which a number of individuals and institutions were recognized for their contributions to the year's activities. In addition, a special issue of the journal Hospital and Community featured articles on the 20 Argentine Public Health Heroes and in September, PAHO Director George Alleyne participated in the inauguration of a PAHO Centennial Plaza in the city of Clorinda, Formosa, during the official launching of the Healthy Borders project. In November an institutional campaign commemorating PAHO´s centennial, produced free of charge by McCann Erickson, was launched on TV.
Public Health Heroes of Argentina
Twenty people - who made a significant contribution in Public Heath in Argentina - have been named "Public Health Heroes of Argentina." These individuals were selected by the National Centennial Advisory Committee, made up of representatives from the Ministry of Health, the National Academy of Medicine, the Argentine Medical Association (AMA), the Association of Schools of Medicines (AFACIMERA), the Medical Confederacy of the Argentine Republic (COMRA) and the Health Federal Council (COFESA).
As a request of the PAHO/WHO Representative Office in Argentina, the journal Hospital and Community published a special issue with the names and biographies of the 20 health heroes.
 Centennial Plaza Inaugurated
In September, during the visit of Dr. George Alleyne, PAHO Director, to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, a Centennial Plaza was inaugurated in the city of Clorinda, Formosa, during the official launching of the "Healthy Borders" project.
The "Healthy Borders" project is a PAHO technical cooperation initiative between Argentina and Paraguay, in which the Argentine municipality of Clorinda and the Paraguayan communities of Nanawa and José Falcón participate.
Postal stamp celebrates PAHO Centennial
On August 7, 2002, the Argentine Postal Service (Correo Argentino) launched a commemorative stamp in honor of the centennial of the Pan American Health Organization. A special postmark and brochure for stamp collectors were also issued with the stamp.
Designed by artist Olcar Alcaide, the stamp features an illustration of various issues associated with children's health. A total of 154,000 stamps were issued.
The brochure provides information about PAHO as well as childhood health and strategies to improve it that are promoted at the international level.
During the event, an exhibit titled "Celebrating 100 in Health" was launched and will remain open to the public until August 17 at the headquarters of the Postal Service. The exhibit portrays PAHO's achievements in public health in all the countries of the Americas.
NEW BOOK: "PAHO in Argentina: Chronicle of a 100-Year Relationship"
On April 25, 2002, at the International Book Fair in Buenos Aires, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Representation in Argentina presented a new publication that tells the story of the relationship during the past 100 years between the Organization and Argentina's health sector. This history of working in cooperation and collaboration since 1902 when PAHO was founded has resulted in the improvement of the health and well being of Argentineans and people throughout the Americas. The book describes major accomplishments, such as the eradication from the Americas of smallpox and polio, and small ones, successes and challenges. The stories and the visions of those who participated enrich this chronicle of technical cooperation in Argentina.
