Canada - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

 [NEW!] Seventeen Canadians Named Public Health Heroes

On October 29, 2002, seventeen Canadians were named Public Health Heroes during the 9th Canadian Conference on International Health. The event was held in the ballroom at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in downtown Ottawa.

The three-day conference, organized by the Canadian Society for International Health which serves as technical representative for PAHO in Canada, has as its theme Poverty, Health and Equity.

The awards were given during an International Night celebration honoring PAHO's 100 years of improvements in public health.

The PAHO Health Heroes in Canada are:

Tree Planting Ceremony Celebrates Centennial

The Canadian Society for International Health carried out a tree planting ceremony in Ottawa to commemorate the PAHO Centennial. A granite stone was cast after the event, with the following inscribed in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese:

In recognition of Canada's contribution to the health of the people of the Americas, and to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Pan American Health Organization, we dedicate the planting of this tree as a growing symbol of our collaboration to improve health in the Americas.
