Colombia - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

[NEW!] Vaccination Day Part of Centennial Celebrations

Colombia held a National Vaccination Day on November 29 as part of its PAHO centennial celebrations. The Getting Up-Date Day followed a similar effort on October 27, which health authorities say reached at least 95 percent of children in the country, except among those under 1 year. The follow-up effort targeted this sector in particular, providing nearly half a million children with vaccines through 12.500 health posts throughout the country.

Events Celebrate Centennial

From June 11 - 14, Bogotá was the site for the International Symposium on Veterinary Public Health. Both the PAHO centennial and the 40th anniversary of the Colombian Agricultural Institute were celebrated during this prestigious meeting.

PAHO's 100th anniversary was also honored in April/May at the 15th International Book Fair in Bogotá, where 847 children received special "healthy artist" badges sporting the PAHO centennial logo.

Other proposed activities include:

  • A "poster" contest in schools entitled: Health Promotion in Healthy Schools for Peace." The winning entry will become the design for the commemorative stamp.
  • A commemorative publication.
  • An historical account of the contributions that PAHO has made to the country in the form of a forum which will highlight the contributions of PAHO in the field of public health.
  • An event that will focus on the nature of cooperation and scenes that bring to light the long and difficult changes that have taken place in the country.
  • The inauguration of the official web page with information on the plans and a list of assistance they offer in the area of public health.
  • An exhibit with the theme, "Health, Disasters and the Participation of PAHO".
  • A well-publicized series of conferences on "Health, Disasters and the Participation of PAHO" involving the major universities that have been our partners for the academic sector and members of scientific societies.
  • Wide dissemination of written material regarding PAHO and its contributions to the country in the academic, professional and public assistance sectors.
