 [NEW!] Honduras grants PAHO the Order José Cecilio del Valle

 On October 18, during his visit to Honduras, Dr. George Alleyne was presented with the Orden José Cecilio del Valle, in the degree of Great Gentleman, by the vice-chancellor Anibal Quiñonez.

Dr. Alleyne gave a conference on Citizen Participation and Health, and met with First Vice-President Vicente Williams, whom he thanked for the honor while emphasizing the high level of cooperation and collaboration between Honduras and PAHO.

Postal stamp celebrates
PAHO Centennial

Honduras issued a commemorative postal stamp in April, following a special edition of the national lottery celebrating PAHO Centennial, in February.


Honduras - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

National Committee will include ex-ministers of health, former PAHO staff members, and other key figures in public health

Planned activities include:

  • Establishing mechanisms to work with NGO's in the country
  • Developing Centennial projects with social and educational activities/programs to include other sectors or groups
  • Producing radio & TV spots and translating them into the existing dialects in Honduras
  • Identifying Public Health Heroes and Champions of Health
  • A commemorative postage stamp
  • Sports championship with people of all ages
  • Special event/meeting with ex Ministers of Health
  • Re-establish the social communicator post in the country office
  • Promote the Centennial on commemorative days
  • Coordinate a photo exhibit on PAHO projects looking back at least at the past 10 years
  • Produce publications about the history of PAHO's technical cooperation in Honduras
  • Present awards/distinctions to public health professionals in Honduras
  • Organize a health fair
  • Exhibit the honors that the MOH office has extended to PAHO so that more people can see them
  • Set-up a discussion forum with media moguls and journalists regarding PAHO's role in the technical cooperation process
  • Design commemorative quilt to place in public spaces
  • Coordinate book fairs and health fairs
  • Set-up an exhibit of historical photographs for display in PAHO offices
  • Document the history of PAHO in Honduras in a small brochure
  • Develop cultural events with the participation of the National Youth Forum (Foro Nacional de la Juventud)
  • Reconstruct the history of PAHO about articles, research - looking at PALTEX documents as well as at the main office library - and create a travelling kiosk or booth display
