Nicaragua - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

[NEW!] National Assembly honors PAHO Centennial

On December 15, the National Assembly honored PAHO's centennial at the closing legislative session, during which it decorated PAHO Representative Patricio Rojas with the Order of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro. A special centennial event held on December 2 drew some 300 participants, including the country's acting minister of health, Margarita Gurdián, and former ministers of health Marta Palacio and Lombardo Martinez. Nicaragua's Champions of Health, singers Carlos and Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy and Norma Helena Cadea and boxing champion Alexis Arguello, were honored at the event, and several of their PAHO public service announcements were shown.

Norma, Alexis, Carlos, and Luis Mejía "champions of health"

Three of the most recognized figures of the music industry and the 6th person in history to win boxing championships in three different weight divisions were selected as "Champions of the Health of Nicaragua" by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), in the year of its centennial.

We are talking about Norma Helena Gadea, Carlos and Luis Enrique Mejía Godoy, and Alexis Argüello. These four champions have agreed to participate in a hemisphere-wide public service announcement campaign on radio and television. These announcements will be health messages against the use of drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, and others. Some of the announcements will be aired in Nicaragua and some will be aired throughout the Americas.
