Paraguay - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

 [NEW!] "Safe Blood" campaign helps promote Centennial

In Paraguay, the country office is publicizing PAHO's centennial through its high-visibility support of the national "Safe Blood" campaign. The daily newspaper "Última Hora" recently published a four-page supplement on the Organization's 100th anniversary.


Other Developments:
  •  A National Centennial Committee has been established and includes representatives from the following:

    National Academy of Medicine
    Ministry of Public Health
    Directing Council of the Institute for Social Prevision
    Dean, School of Medical Sciences from the National University
    President of the commission for Health of the House of Representatives

  •  The committee is presided over by Dr. Martin Chiola, Minister of Health.
  •  Nominations for Public Health Heroes have been compiled, as well as nominations for Champions of Health
  •  Press conferences in 2001 including newspapers, TV and radio to publicize the centennial events.
  •  A series of meetings and interviews with the media and the PWR regarding the centennial.
  •  A commemorative 4-page color spread on the centennial and cooperation between Paraguay and PAHO in "Ultima Hora".
  •  An event at the Hotel Excelsior on World Health Day 2002 that will focus on World Health Day themes and on the centennial.
  •  Celebration Day event (September 2002) will encompass a large audience of government officials and public dignitaries. Presentation of "Health in the Americas", entertainment.
  •  National Essay Contest on the theme, "Equality and Health." (Contest open to health professionals)
  •  Series of conferences and cultural events to take place in the Manzana de la Rivera, designed for the general public organized with the help of NGO "Orbis Tertius".
  •  Issue of a commemorative postage stamp.
  •  Dissemination of the PAHO 100 logo on all materials produced with the cooperation of PAHO/Paraguay.
