Uruguay - Plans for Centennial Celebrations

 [NEW!] First Municipal Healthy Food Day

Uruguay's centennial activities continued with the country's first Municipal Healthy Food Day on May 20. Events around the country provided information on nutrition and proper food preparation, and a number of food manufactures opened their doors to more than 1,600 visiting schoolchildren, who were able to view food-processing techniques firsthand.


Special PAHO Centennial Plaza Dedicated

The First Lady Mercedes Menafra de Batlle dedicated a special PAHO Centennial Plaza in the city of Tacuarembó on April 8, and PAHO's Director Dr. George Alleyne spoke in videoconference from Washington, D.C. with Uruguay's Director General of Health Ofelia López, Tacuarembó Hospital Director Ciro Ferreira, and PAHO Representative José Fiusa Lima in Tacuarembó.



Other Developments:
  • The Ministry of Public Health and the National Medical Union have formed high level internal committees to follow up on the development of centennial ideas and to proceed with the planning of events.
  • Produce a special publication entitled "PAHO and Health in Uruguay: A Story of Interactive Relationships (1902 - 2002)"
  • The issuing of a commemorative stamp has been approved by the National Postal Administration.
  • Organize a scientific event/project with the Ministry of Health that can be declared of national interest by the Executive Branch
  • Work with the media to get space dedicated exclusively for the centennial and commemorative events in the press and on television
  • Coordinate a special award in collaboration with the National Academy of Medicine
  • Work with the Congress of Municipalities to select a city square and place a commemorative plaque honoring the centennial
  • Work with the National Directing Council for Education(CODICEN) to organize a poster contest at the primary and secondary school-level as well as a contest with the School of Fine Arts (Escuela de Bellas Artes)
