Voices of the Centennial
Reflections on
PAHO Past and Present (part 2)

Dr. Elsa Moreno, former Director, Maternal and Child Health
"For me the fact that the Pan American Health Organization celebrates its first centennial has a very special meaning, inasmuch as it is a supranational agency that has collaborated unceasingly in the region of the Americas, even before the World Health Organization was started. That is, it has filled imperative needs and has been very successful and effective. Furthermore, the type of cooperation in which it works to develop the capacities of the countries and to train personnel, to mobilize resources of the countries themselves, helps improve the health situation in many of them through the decided actions that the Organization has taken."

Dr. Miguel Márquez, former PAHO Representative in Cuba
"The actions of the future have very deep roots in the past. Our moral obligation is [to see] that the new generations are able to nourish themselves from that which was being constructed, from that historical web through time."

Drs. Moreno, Acuña, Márquez, and Macedo

Dr. Héctor Acuña, Director 1975-1983
"My dream remains that the Pan American Health Organization continues to be a pioneer not only in the American hemisphere, but also in the world, including within the World Health Organization, of which it is part [and that] it be the spearhead for countries, especially developing countries, in confronting both traditional problems of public health and those that are emerging."

Dr. Carlyle Guerra de Macedo, Director 1983-1995
"Every human being in every part of the world, not only in the Americas, but particularly in our America, deserves to be a citizen with rights, with responsibilities, but with the possibility of fulfilling the potential with which he was born, with which we are all born."
