El Salvador After the Earthquake: A Photo Story
By Jorge Jenkins and Armando Waak/PAHO

Major earthquakes struck El Salvador on January 13 and February 13, 2001: more than 1,200 persons dead, 200,000 homeless, and 24 hospitals and 116 health centers damaged. Thousands of aftershocks created continuous fear and more physical damage.

"It is necessary to sustain interest in reconstruction of the country and not to forget El Salvador after the emergency stage ends. My fear is that when the humanitarian aspect recedes, people will forget the large needs that El Salvador will have for a long, long time."-- Dr. George Alleyne, director of PAHO.
