HEALTH SYSTEMS STRENGTHENING HEALTH SYSTEM PROFILES GUYANA

Health System Profile of Guyana
GuyanaThe responsibility of providing health care to the population corresponds to the Minister of Health. However, in 1986, the responsibility for health services delivery was delegated to the Regional Democratic Councils that receive financing through the Ministry of Local Government. The Ministry of Health maintains the responsibility of vertical health programs throughout the country. The Ministry also formulates policies, sets standards and controls, and, in addition, evaluates the health sector. In order to create semi-autonomous entities and make it possible for the Ministry of Health to redesign its function of health service provider, a decentralized model has emerged.

Health System Profile of Guyana

The profile was prepared by a group of five professionals and national policy decision makers from the Ministry of Health of Guyana and the PAHO/WHO Representation in Guyana. Technical coordination of the national group was the responsibility of the Planning Unit of the Ministry of Health of Guyana and the PAHO/WHO Representation in Guyana. The external review was completed by the Social Development Specialist of the Inter-American Development Bank country office in Guyana. Final review, edition, and translation are the responsibility of the Health Systems and Policies Unit, PAHO/WHO, Washington, DC.
