Health System Profile of Venezuela

VenezuelaAt the end of 1999, the Ministry of Health and Social Development (MSDS), was established. The MSDS has been promoting the transformation of the organization model of health services, proposed as a priority in the restructuring of the central level of the ministry, the development of a new model of care and the creation of a national public health system. The health sector is made up of a public subsector, comprised of multiple institutions that operate in disintegrated, centralized and deconcentrated manner, and by the private subsector. The MSDS is the regulatory arm of the sector responsible for the formulation, design, evaluation, control and monitoring of policies, programs and health plans, as well as the integration of sources of financing and resource allocation for the National Public Health System.

Health System Profile of Venezuela

The second edition of the Profile was prepared by a group of 19 professionals and national policy decision-making representatives of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security, the National Institute of Geriatric Care, the Center of Public Policies of the Institute of Advanced Management Studies, and PAHO/WHO. PAHO/WHO Venezuela country office was responsible for the technical coordination of the National Group. The School of Public Health of the Central University of Venezuela was commissioned to conduct the external review. Final review, edition, and translation are the responsibility of the Health Systems and Policies Unit, PAHO/WHO, Washington, DC.
