Workshop Objective:
The objective of this Workshop was to present and discuss the findings and policy implications of four (4) case-studies examining the relationship between nutrition and health, human capital and economic growth in different countries of the Latin America and the Caribbean. Researchers presented and discussed their findings about the empirical evidence on the impact of differences in the nutrition and health status of a population in explaining differences in the quality and longevity of human capital, and in explaining the persistence of poverty and income and social inequalities.
Researchers presented and discussed hypothesis about the transmission mechanisms by which differences in nutrition and health status of the population may explain differences in: the rates of return to investments in education, labor productivity, adaptability to change, and the rate of accumulation of capital (physical and human) of different socio economic groups
Presentation of researchers were followed by open discussion on the policy implications of the findings of the case studies. Focus of the discussion was on the implications of the findings for national health and human development policies, and policies aimed to achieve long term economic growth and social development: reduction of poverty and inequalities.
