In March 2000, a Department for Injuries and Violence Prevention (VIP) was created. Its mission is to lead global action to prevent violence and unintentional injuries as major threats to public health. Its goals are as follows:

  • To promote and facilitate international violence and injury prevention research.
  • To promote improved standards of teaching and training for violence and injury prevention and safety promotion.
  • To foster multi-disciplinary collaboration between relevant global, regional and national stakeholders.
  • To compile and disseminate best practices to violence and injury prevention and control.
