"Water and Sanitation in the New Millennium:
Old and New Challenges and Opportunities"

PURPOSE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
To analyze the results of the Global Water Supply and Sanitation Assessment, "Assessment 2000," in the Region of the Americas.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Disseminate and analyze the process of the Assessment 2000, its extension, and follow-up for the next decade.
- Analyze the water supply and sanitation sectoral situation, its linkage, and impact on social development, the environment and the health of the populations.
- Analyze the challenges of the next decade in terms of water supply and sanitation.
- Discuss the proposed strategy for PAHO technical cooperation for the next decade, with regard to water supply and sanitation.
EXPECTED RESULTS
- Achieve an understanding with regard to the actions required for the goal of universal coverage and improvement of the quality of the water supply and sanitation services in the Americas Region.
- Consolidate the proposed strategy for PAHO technical cooperation for the next decade with regard to water supply and sanitation.
METHODOLOGY
The methodology includes a series of presentations with a directional approach to provide a frame of reference for Assessment 2000. It also includes interventions on the challenges of the decade in water supply and sanitation in its different aspects in order to establish criteria for orientation for PAHO technical cooperation. Panels of experts will deal with key specific subjects that constitute the pillar and the essence of the Assessment 2000. The presentations will be complemented with sessions of working groups, where various aspects of Assessment 2000 will be examined and discussed. The conclusions of the working group sessions will be presented and discussed in plenary sessions.
For each section of the Symposium a moderator will be designated who will be in charge of directing the question and answer session that will follow the respective presentations. In addition, a coordinator and a reporter will be designated in order to consolidate the results of the working groups, which will be presented in the plenary debates, under the direction of a moderator.
Two reporters will be appointed for the preparation of the report on the Symposium. The preliminary version of the report will be presented at the closure of the meeting. The observations of the participants will be collected in order to include them in the final report that will be submitted during the first day of the XXVII AIDIS Congress that will follow immediately after the Symposium.
