REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: TO STUDY RISK FACTORS OF HEPATITIS C INFECTION
AMONG MULTI TRANSFUSED PATIENTS

As part of the Blood Safety Initiative, the Pan American Health Organization will support studies aimed at studying the role of transfusion of blood products in the epidemiology of hepatitis C infections in the Americas. Proposals are requested from Latin American and Caribbean institutions that have the technical and operational capacity to conduct epidemiological and biomedical research in accordance with the protocol guidelines.

The overall goal of this effort is to prevent the transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) through the transfusion of blood and its components.

Study population: multi transfused individuals
Methodology: cross sectional study
Laboratory analyses: HCV antibodies and antigenemia, HIV antibodies and hepatitis B surface antigenemia
Duration: 12 months
Starting date: July 2002
Progress report date: 15 November 2002
Final report date: 30 April 2003
Manuscript for scientific publication: 7 July 2003

Proposals submitted to the Regional Program for Laboratory and Blood Services* before April 30th 2002, must include:

A progress and a final report, respectively, must be submitted to PAHO six months after initiation of the study and no later than three months after the end of the study period. At least one publication in a scientific journal is expected from each participating group.

Data files will also be sent to PAHO, to construct a Regional database, for inter country analyses by PAHO staff.
