- The purpose of this system is to produce a table using a set of three dimensions: Years,
Country/Subregion and Indicator, to query the data in the system
and their sources.
- To produce a table, you must define its content by setting each dimension as a fixed, column
or row attribute (see Figure A):
- Fixed. Indicates a single value of reference for the table, that is, whether
the table refers to a specific country, year or indicator. For example, a
specific country (Argentina) can be set as fixed for a group of years (1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998) and for a group of indicators
(Population, Annual Death Average, Infant Mortality). When the table is
generated, the fixed dimension will appear in a drop-down menu (see Figure B).
Changing the value of the fixed dimension will produce a new table while
maintaining the attributes chosen for the rows and columns.

- Rows. Indicates that the selected dimension appears in the horizontal rows
of the table. Each row can have different values; the number of rows is
determined by the number of values selected. Examples of values for the setting
row are: Years (1994, 1995, 1996, 1997), Indicators (Population, Infant
Mortality), Countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay).
- Columns. Indicates that the dimension selected appears in the vertical
columns of the table. Like rows, columns can have different values.

- When the Year dimensionis set as fixed, the value can be the last year available or a
specific year. If it is set as row or column, you may select
several years using the [CRTL] key to select them one by one, or using [SHIFT]
to select an interval. It is not possible to include the last available year
in a multiple selection.
- When the Countrydimension is set as fixed, you are able to select only one
country to generate the table. If it is set as row or column, you
are able to select several countries. All the countries in a subregion can be
selected using the Subregions mode. You may choose more than one
subregion, in which case the system includes all countries pertaining to the
selected subregions. However, you cannot select a combination of subregions and
countries.
- The Indicator dimension is comprised of five groups of indicators: A. Demographic;
B. Socioeconomic; C. Mortality; D. Morbidity and risk factors;
and E. Resources, Services and Coverage. The indicators can be disaggregated
based on categories (sex, age group, etc.). The option boxes below the
indicators menu allow you to select disaggregations. The system allows the
selection of only those categories that are available for a given indicator. To
review the list of available indicators, and their technical definitions,
notes, units of measurement, etc., use the Indicators
and Data Glossary.

- You may change the attributes for the dimensions at any time by
selecting the options to the left of the menu (Fixed, Rows, Columns).
The system requires a unique setting for each dimension and will reassign the
setting, when a change is made.
- When your selection is completed, valid and ready to be submitted the
mark in each dimension
changes to In order to execute the selection, click the [Generate Table] button.
- Optionally the selection may be reviewed at any time by clicking To review
your selection, which opens a window with the selection details (see
Figure C). Use this option to review the values of your selection before
executing it with the [Generate Table] button.

- Optionally, the table format may be modified using the
Format options for the output table....
This opens a window (see Figure D) with the current parameters for the table.
These parameters are: table borders (from no border to 3 points),
cell spacing (from no space to 3 points width between the cells)
and background colors for the cells.
- Once the table is produced, you can access the reference sources
for each value in the table by clicking the desired value. This opens a
window showing the source for
that specific value (see Figure E). If you are using Internet Explorer, a
yellow box (also called ToolTip) showing the data source appears
automatically when placing the pointer on the value without clicking.
- You may also
access the definition of the indicator(s) shown in the table by clicking
on the indicator name. This will open a window with the definition, technical
note, and measurement units (see Figure F). You can review the complete
glossary of the basic indicators using: Indicators
and Data Glossary

- To access the country
profiles for the countries displayed in the table, click the country
name. This opens the country health profile for that specific country.
- To export the table, click Export... This
generates a table accessible in Microsoft
Excel (application/x-msexcel). If your browser is not set up to
associate this file type with the application, a dialog box will open where you
can choose to save the file or select an application (Excel or other compatible
spreadsheet) to be associated with that file type.
- To print
the table, click Print... This generates a table with a layout
appropriate for printing (without the links and colors). This option is useful
for wide tables, because it automatically divides the table into several
narrower tables to facilitate easy printing.
