Summary
The objective of these guidelines is to inform international researchers who receive grants from PAHO of their responsibility in complying with ethical guidelines and how they should go about meeting the necessary requirements. In its research activities, PAHO seeks to ensure that any project in which it is involved complies with international ethical guidelines.
The PAHO Communicable-Disease Research Program, in its dual function of promotion of research and involvement in developing research capacity in developing countries, has been entrusted with the task of ensuring that these guidelines be followed. All PAHO grants needs to meet certain criteria and should have already undergone a process of ethical review before submission to PAHO and subsequent review by the PAHO Ethical Review Committee (PAHOERC).
Any project submitted to PAHO for a grant must contain the following:
- Detailed description of procedures to be followed to protect persons participating in the study (this should be contained within the protocol).
- Copy of informed consent form to be used with human subjects participating in the study.
- Signed certification by the local/institutional/ad hoc Ethical Review Committee (ERC).
