Disaster Chronicles: El Niño 1997-1998 (only in Spanish) Now that we are in a period "between Niños," it would be extremely useful to revisit the 1997/1998 phenomenon and draw from the experiences and lessons learned, so we can better prepare ourselves for the next episode. Disaster Chronicle: Hurricanes Georges and Mitch An analysis of the impact on health, capturing the lessons learned on preparedness and the response from the health sector in the assistance to the victims of Georges and Mitch. These hurricanes that had devastating consequences and severely affected the population of Central America and the Caribbean in September and October of 1998. We have compiled eight national reports in this series which describe the events and analyze the impact on the most affected countries.

Hurricane Gilbert, Jamaica (only in English ) Hurricane Gilbert, which hit Jamaica in September 1988, caused widespread devastation, not least of which was the damage sustained by some 90% of the island's health facilities. This report describes preparedness and response activities carried out by the health sector, the health surveillance system adopted, and the situation in temporary shelters. It summarizes lessons learned in this disaster, and is of value for those having to face emergency situations in the future.

Jamaica, St Vincent and Dominica (only in English ) In 1979, the Caribbean was hit by three consecutive disasters. In April, the Soufriere Volcano erupted, forcing the authorities on the island of St. Vincent to resettle nearly 20% of the population to the already densely inhabited southern section of the island. In July, floods caused major damage to Jamaica, and in September, Dominica suffered major damage as a result of Hurricane David. This report provides an overview of the most serious health aspects of these disasters, giving special emphasis to epidemiologic surveillance and the control of communicable diseases following disasters.

The Effects of Hurricane David on the Population of Dominica (only in English ) This report evaluates how the people of Dominica were affected by Hurricane David, which hit the Caribbean on 29 August 1979. It analyzes the impact of the hurricane on housing, agriculture, employment, food supply, etc., and examines the reconstruction process. The authors give special emphasis to health problems (injuries and illness, medical treatment, communicable diseases, and the impact on pregnant women). It presents a series of conclusions and lessons learned.
