Research Coordination

About

Description of the Program:

The Research Coordination Program of the Division of Health and Human Development (HDP/HDR) cooperates with the countries of the Region to develop knowledge that contributes to alleviate relevant public health problems of their populations. The Strategic and Programmatic Orientations approved by the Panamerican Sanitary Conference and the recommendations of the PAHO's Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) are the main guidelines to orient the work of this Program. HDP/HDR carries out its activities both through the coordination of the work carried out by other Programas of the Organization in the area of research, and through direct technical cooperation with the countries.

Lines of Action of HDP/HDR:

  • HDP/HDR supports the National Research Councils and the Research Units of the Ministries of Health in order to improve their mastering of tools for science management, to strengthen scientific and technical information systems, to improve the processes of technical and ethical review of research projects and to foster their capacity to identify possible financial resources to support research projects. HDP/HDR coordinates the implementation of the Virtual Health Library- Science and Health (BVS-CyS) with the objective to support the management of the scientific activity in health in the Region.

  • It supports the production of knowledge of priority public health problems and the strengthening of the scientific and technical infrastructure of the countries of the Region through the Research Grants Program.

  • It acts as technical secretariat of the Advisory Committee on Health Research (ACHR) and the internal committees of PAHO/WHO related to research as the Internal Advisory Committee on Research (IACR), and the Ethical Review Committee on Research (PAHOERC).

  • It is responsible for coordinating the process of designating, follow-up, and evaluation of PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centers, which are centers of excellence of the Region that cooperate with the various technical areas of PAHO/WHO in research activities.

  • It maintains an information system on institutions, projects and researchers that participate in research activities developed by PAHO/WHO technical programs.
