Health Promotion Forum in the Americas and II Chilean Congress on Health Promotion
The Division of Health Promotion and Protection and the Ministry of Chile are sponsoring a forum on "Health Promotion in the Americas". The Forum will take place in Santiago, Chile, October 20-24, 2002. The Forum will bring together more than 500 high level national and local government officials, health professionals and mayors to participate in a review and discussion of the progress made in strengthening health promotion in the last two years.(30/Aug/2002)

What is Health Promotion in PAHO?
The Pan-American Health Organization's definition of health promotion is founded in the Ottawa Charter which states that health promotion is, the process of enabling and empowering people to take control over and improve the determinants of health. Health promotion involves: building healthy public policies, creating a supportive setting, strengthening community action, developing personal abilities, and reorienting health services. Healthy Municipalities and Communities - Mayors' Guide
The purpose of this kit for mayors and other local authorities is to provide information and orientation to decision-makers about the main components of the HMC Strategy, which puts health promotion concepts into practice at the municipal level. The Kit includes and defines afew health promotion terms related to the process of implementing HMC such as empowerment and healthy public policy which may be unfamiliar.
