Pan American Alliance for Nutrition and Development
Washington, D.C. Julio 25, 2008.- Top United Nations experts on Latin America and the Caribbean agreed on the establishment of the Pan American Alliance for Nutrition and Development.
PAHO Director Roses noted that, despite overall improvements in nutritional status at the aggregate level in Latin America and the Caribbean, 52 million people in the region are still undernourished, and 9 million children under 5 are chronically malnourished. The Pan American Alliance for Nutrition and Development would promote better nutrition not just through food production and distribution but with a broad range of actions, ranging from safer cooking stoves and safe water to urban agriculture and sustainable use of natural resources.

First Round of Community Cardiovascular Health Promoters Receives Diplomas (INCAP, Guatemala City, Guatemala, 26 June 2008)
With their graduation on 26 June 2008 at the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP) in Guatemala City, the country now has 29 certified cardiovascular health promoters trained in education, prevention, and timely detection of cardiovascular diseases. PAHO collaborated in this effort through the Pan American Cardiovascular Initiative with the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute of the United States.(26/Jun/2008)

This 2007 edition of Health in the Americas presents a broad picture of the regional situation and that of all the countries with regard to health and human development; specific disease conditions and risk factors; environmental health, and the evolution of health systems and services. In addition, it considers and discusses progress made regarding the global commitment, expressed in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to tackle extreme poverty, hunger, disease, lack of water and sanitation, inadequate housing, and social exclusion and to promote gender equality, education, and environmental sustainability. CARMEN: A Network for Integrated Prevention and Control of Chronic Noncommunicable Disease in the Americas
The CARMEN Pan American Network was developed because there was an increasing awareness among PAHO member countries that chronic noncommunicable diseases (CNCDs) account for nearly two-thirds of the total number of deaths in the Americas, and that, to a large extent, these diseases are dependent on risk factors and lifestyles that are amenable to modification. Regional Strategy on an Integrated Approach to the Prevention and Control of Chronic Diseases Including Diet, Physical Activity, and Health
Chronic diseases are the major cause of death in all the countries of the Americas. This strategy was created to deal with this new epidemic: It Strategy is comprehensive, requiring a combination of interventions for the population and individuals. It is integrated, spanning prevention and control strategies focusing on the major chronic diseases and cross-cutting risk factors (especially diet, physical activity, tobacco, and alcohol). Finally, it is intersectoral, because most of the major determinants of the chronic-disease burden lie outside the health sector.
