Drug Abuse
The rapid spread and pervasiveness of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and illegal drugs has created a grave situation which has caught the countries of the Region of the Americas unprepared and which far exceeds the capacity of the governments to respond effectively. Thus, it is essential to strengthen knowledge in this field and to promote epidemiologic studies such as those reported here. Health authorities, researchers, and health workers involved in drug abuse prevention and treatment will find the material in this volume useful for understanding the current status of the drug abuse problem and what is being done to combat it.(7/Jun/1990)

Reliability of the Brazilian version of the CIDI in a case-control study of risk factors for drug abuse among adults in Rio de Janeiro
Using a test-retest design, the reliability of DSM-III-R diagnoses generated by the Brazilian version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) was evaluated in a sample of 30 subjects. This sample was drawn from first interviews conducted for a case-control study of risk factors for drug abuse among adults in Rio de Janeiro. These findings show the portions of the new CIDI version tested to be sound and appropriate for use in future investigations of adult psychiatric and substance dependence/abuse diagnoses in Brazil. As governments, organizations, and individuals strive to combat AIDS deaths and the spread of HIV, we must all aim high. The magnitude of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and its potential to spread require high level planning and large scale action. When the World Health Organization and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS set the goal to treat three million people with antiretrovirals by 2005, it was with this aim to think big and achieve commensurate gains.(3/Aug/2006)
