2008 World Day for Safety and Health at Work
Washington, D.C. May 1st., 2008.- Director's closing remarks at PAHO HQ Ceremony.
'Since the launch of the PAHO Workers' Health Regional Plan of Action in 1999, several milestones have been attained to help improve the lives and well-being of million of workers, their families, and communities in the Americas. Over the years, there has been an increase in awareness of the role and influence of our environment and workplace environment on our health. This has been possible through the advocacy and work of local, national, and international leaders in the field of occupational and environmental health. This day provides us with an opportunity to recognize the commitment of the global community that works towards a common goal: improving the health and safety of workers.'

World No Tobacco Day 2004: Tobacco and Poverty, a vicious circle
Together, tobacco and poverty create a vicious circle. Tobacco not only impoverishes those who use it, it puts an enormous financial burden on countries. The money spent on tobacco cannot be spent on basic human needs as food, shelter, education and health care, and the high costs of tobacco use at the national level in terms of health care and loss of productivity, among others, are often neglected.(24/Oct/2005)

Chronic Lung Disorders.
This chapter of the book "Building Better Health: A Handbook of Behavioral Change"discusses how respiratory diseases can be prevented, even more easily than cured. Emphysema and all respiratory cancers could all be rare if only society applied the knowledge that it already has to prevent them. Risk factors as indoor and outdoor air pollution and primary prevention as well as secondary prevention (screening of workers) are discussed. This chapter also covers tuberculosis, since it is a chronic disease of the lungs.
