What is PAHO? The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) is an international public health agency with more than 100 years of experience in working to improve health and living standards of the countries of the Americas. It serves as the specialized organization for health of the Inter-American System. It also serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization and enjoys international recognition as part of the United Nations system.

History of PAHO in The Bahamas

PAHO Bahamas Office

The relationship between The Bahamas and the Pan American Health Organization began in October 1964, even though The Bahamas did not apply for membership in PAHO until it had become an independent nation. The application for membership was approved by the XIX Pan American Sanitary Conference and The Bahamas became a member on October 8, 1974.  Its affairs were conducted through the PAHO office in Jamaica.

In 1978, PAHO, in collaboration with the Government of The Bahamas, established a sub-regional office of the Jamaica Office in The Bahamas with a resident staff member.  The office was upgraded to full Country Office status in 1982 with the significant improvement of affording the national Ministry of Health direct access to PAHO’s resources and of enhancing the Organization’s response capability.

In addition to its technical and collaborative role, PAHO has always recognized that in order to achieve sustained development of the health services, at least two complementary activities must be supported:

  • The development and training of Bahamian Nationals to improve indigenous capability.
  • The occasional provision of some supplies and equipment to augment those resources being provided by the Ministry.

In this regard, PAHO maintains a very active fellowship program and frequently conducts workshops and seminars.

The Office is currently located in Union Court at the intersection of Shirley Street and Elizabeth Avenue, Nassau, New Providence.
