The 2011 Sérgio Arouca Award for Excellence in Universal Health Care was presented to the Integrated Management of Adolescent and Adult Illness (IMAI) Program of Guyana’s Ministry of Health, during the afternoon session of PAHO’s 50th Directing Council. Dr. Marcia Paltoo, Director of the Young Adult Health and Wellness Unit of Guyana’s Ministry of Health, accepted the award, which recognized the IMAI’s efforts to to deliver high-quality health services and improve care and treatment of illnesses in a context of limited resources.
“Instead of only treatment of acute illnesses, IMAI focused on the management and prevention of chronic disease: a chronic care model for universal health care delivery,” said Dr. Paltoo. “IMAI also gave us the chance to address other areas for HIV/AIDS such as mental health. The strategy fit into existing services so that the health system can function more efficiently.”
