Dr Roses explains purposes and expected outcomes of WHO Reform.

According to PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses, changes in global public health over the past 60 years create new challenges and opportunities; the proliferation of global health players and initiatives calls for greater coordination and alignment; there is a need to focus on strategic priorities based on mandates and different health development situations; the Organization needs to respond more effectively and efficiently at each level to the growing needs of Member States, which requires more predictable and sustainable financing. WHO reform can optimize the opportunities created by health sector reforms and global health initiatives.

Expected outcomes of this reform would be transforming governance to strengthen public health; reforming the financing and management of WHO; and refocusing 5 Priority Program Areas (core business) to address the 21st century health challenges, said Dr. Roses.
