Representatives from the Member States, and PAHO technical staff headed by Assistant Director Socorro Gross, met this afternoon with Dr. Guillermo Gonzalez, Board Representative for Developing Countries of the Americas and Europe from GAVI, and Alex Palacios, Special Representative of the GAVI Secretariat, working in immunization schedules.
Alex Palacios, GAVI, highlighted the progress that eligible countries in the Americas have made and highlighted the desire to expand this collaboration with PAHO and the Member States. Dr. Socorro Gross expressed satisfaction at the success that PAHO Member States have had, with the support of GAVI, in strengthening immunization programs, and in becoming, thanks to the Alliance, the first to be eligible to introduce rotavirus and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines.
Representatives from the governments of Bolivia, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, and Nicaragua acknowledged the impact of PAHO’s technical support in the implementation of GAVI support in the region and invited the Alliance to continue working with PAHO to leverage their expertise.
At this meeting, Dr. Gonzalez reiterated his commitment to Member States as their representative. He acknowledged the work of Bolivia’s Health Minister, Nila Heredia, as the new Alternate Representative on the Council of Representatives of Developing Countries in the Americas and Europe in GAVI.
PAHO meets annually with GAVI within the framework of the Directing Council of the Organization. This has resulted in promoting an open dialogue between Member States and GAVI.
