Virtual Dialogues addressing present and future of eHealth in the Americas begin: New ideas, #eHealthtalks and, upcoming events

The “eHealth Conversations: Information management, dialogue and knowledge exchange to approach universal access to health” project has begun, with more than 300 eHealth professionals discussing and reflecting on the present and future of eHealth in the Americas.

From 19 to 23 November, the virtual dialogues addressed the following aspects of eHealth: how to improve organizational and technological infrastructure for eHealth (Infrastructure); policies in other countries for implementing information systems (Information Systems); the original World Health Organization definition of telemedicine (Telemedicine); access to information as a window of opportunity (Access to Information); the importance of implementing eHealth policies (Policies); confusion about the term eSalud-eHealth (Education); the relationship between e-Government and e-Health in the different countries of the Hemisphere (e-Government and eHealth); and the difference between manual and online processes (eHealth Management).

The eHealth conversations are also opening opportunities for dialogue in social networks. Those interested in contributing to or following the conversations on Twitter can use the #ehealthtalks hashtag.

Each virtual conversation will run for 120 days. Its main goals will be to prepare a situation analysis, identify national and international experts and networks in each subject area, and issue conclusions and recommendations for PAHO/WHO and its Member States to consider when implementing eHealth projects.

The virtual conversations are a step forward for the Strategy and Plan of Action on eHealth for the Americas. Through free and equitable access to information and knowledge sharing, the project seeks to establish a regional mechanism to ensure the convergence of local, national, and regional initiatives for the development, adoption, and implementation of information and communication technologies for public health. It also seeks to help decision makers and others understand and prepare for the near future.

Supported by Spain Cooperation, the eHealth Conversations project will produce a publication that will be updated periodically and disseminated through PAHO/WHO media channels and social networks.
