Belmopan. April 1, 2010. “Urbanization and Health” is the theme for World Health Day 2010. Its commemoration will provide an opportunity to focus on the many health challenges related to water, environment, sanitation, violence and injury, non-communicable diseases and their risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical activity, harmful use of alcohol as well as the risks associated with diseases outbreaks in cities and towns.
In commemoration of World Health Day 2010, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization and Belize City Council will be hosting a multi-sectoral Health Fair on April 7th, 2010. Opening ceremonies will be held at Fred Westby Park, Albert Street West, Belize City at 9:00 am.
The Ministry of Health and PAHO joined the Belize City council in cleaning and renovating the park. The official ceremony at the park will be followed by the health fair where free HIV Testing, Blood Pressure Monitoring, Glucose Testing and Body Mass Index will be offered free of cost.
World Health Day should be seen as a symbolic day of commitment to incorporate health from multiple sectors of the population while engaging a wide scope of partners.
As part of World Health Day festivities, the global campaign entitled “1000 Cities, 1000 Lives” has been launched to encourage cities, towns, neighborhoods and local authorities to conduct health-promoting activities on or around World Health Day (the week of 7-11 April, 2010).
The goal of the 1000 Cities campaign is to open public spaces to health, for example by closing off portions of streets to motorized vehicles and opening them up to people, holding town hall meetings, and community forums, promoting more active civil society participation in local planning and governance, initiating clean-up campaigns and conducting work-place and school based health initiatives.
In 1948, the First World Health Assembly called for the creation of a "World Health Day" to mark the founding of the World Health Organization. Since 1950, World Health Day has been celebrated on the 7th of April annually. Each year a theme is selected for World Health Day that highlights a priority area of concern for the World Health Organization.
World Health Day is a worldwide opportunity to focus on key public health issues that affect the international community.
