PAHO promotes scientific research to the University of Belize

Belmopan City, 21 October 2011 –The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization in Belize, was part of the University of Belize brown bag lunches to promote scientific research in the area of noncommunicable diseases.

Quality of diabetes care: a cross sectional study of adults of Hispanic origin across and along the Mexico US Border, was presented by Dr. Gerardo de Cosio, PAHO/WHO Belize Representative, who was then coordinator and project manager of study done in 2001-2002.


Active ImageIn his presentation, Dr. de Cosio outlined the prevalence study of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors which was conducted along the U.S.-Mexico border using cluster sampling of towns and households within towns. A questionnaire was administered on diabetes and lifestyle and a physical examination and blood sample were obtained. He provided a comprehensive analysis of the study from the coordination, situation analysis, findings, conclusions, recommendations to lessons learnt.

The faculty of the University became attentive on how this study was carried about particularly in seeking and obtaining funds, and how donors became convinced that this was a successful study. Dr. de Cosio emphasized that he always provided deliverables to the donors in a timely manner.

Dr. Abigail McKay, Dean, Faculty of Nursing and Social Science, University of Belize, commented that her Faculty will use this study and strategy to conduct their study of foot care for diabetic patients. It is feasible, simple and is not costly.


The Pan American Health Organization, which is the Regional Office in the Americas of the World Health Organization, was founded in 1902, and works with all countries of the Americas to improve the health and quality of life of their peoples. The PAHO/WHO Country Office in Belize was established in the 1950s.
